My Background …..
Hi, I’m Marisa Schreier, a dyslexia specialist tutor and teacher in Perth, and the founder of Sensory Learning Services.
Since 2010, I’ve helped primary school students who find reading and spelling challenging. Many of my students have dyslexia, dysgraphia, ADHD, Developmental Language Disorder or poor working memory.
My experience includes:
- 15+ years of one-on-one reading and spelling intervention
- 30 plus years teaching experience
- Former registered specialist tutor with The Dyslexia-SPELD Foundation of WA
- Training in Hickey, Alpha to Omega, Toe by Toe, Sounds-Write, Talk 4 Writing and ASCEND Smarter Reading & Writing Intervention
- Language support teacher at the Telethon Speech and Hearing Centre
I keep up to date with the science of reading, so I can choose the right program for each child, track their progress closely, and adjust my teaching to suit them.
As part of my degree at Edith Cowan University, I studied linguistics which sparked my passion for teaching literacy. Throughout my career, I have kept up to date with the science of reading and the best teaching practices for students with Specific Learning Disorders, particularly dyslexia and dysgraphia. Always looking for ways to better serve my students, I also trained in the evidence-based ASCEND Smarter Reading & Writing Intervention program.
Because I understand the research-based principles behind each program I’m trained in, I can select the right program for each student. I monitor their progress regularly, so I can plan and adapt my teaching to suit their individual needs.

The first time I read this quote, it resonated with me, and it has guided my approach ever since.
I believe teaching is a vocation, and you must love what you do. This is how I feel about teaching, and why I chose to become a specialist tutor:
- I LOVE teaching literacy to young children who find it hard.
- I LOVE adjusting my teaching to suit each student, including those who need extra time to focus, process, consolidate and retrieve information.
- I LOVE the organic nature of each session, which gives me the freedom to follow learning opportunities as they arise.
- I LOVE getting to know each student and creating multi-sensory activities that keep them actively engaged.
- I LOVE helping students become active learners who take ownership of their learning, supported by positive, immediate feedback.
- I LOVE having fun and building relationships, so my students feel relaxed and safe to take risks.
