- Is your child still unsure how to construct a sentence?
- Are they unsure of where a full stop goes?
- Do they ramble?
- Do they lack detail?
At Sensory Learning Services, we run school holiday writing courses for kids designed specifically for students up to Yr 7 who are struggling with the following skills:
- Sentence construction
- Narrative Writing
- Persuasive Writing
What makes our approach different to what is taught at school?
- We specialise in writing intervention all day, everyday!
- We know what best practice looks like
- We know how to simplify instruction for struggling students
Writing is a lot like cooking…you follow a recipe and eventually you learn to remember it. Firstly, the ingredients you choose will determine how the recipe tastes! Then, as your confidence in your cooking abilities improves you learn to substitute one ingredient for another and discover what tastes better.
At Sensory Learning Services, we use this simple analogy to teach sentence structure, narratives and persuasives. The recipe is what we refer to as a ‘writing framework’ and the ingredients are our choice of ‘words/ vocabulary’.
You may have heard the following expressions:
“A cook is only as good as the ingredients they use.”
and
” A chef’s magic is their ingredients.”
Often we want to try out a recipe but sometimes we don’t have the ingredients in the pantry to access. This is what happens to many of our struggling students. At school, they have been taught or provided with a recipe to follow (known as a writing framework), but unfortunately they don’t have the ingredients to add (known as “limited expressive vocabulary”). Consequently, these students continue to find writing to be a frustrating challenge.
With our simple approach, we provide students with checklists, vocabulary lists and sentence starting prompts to construct sentences for a range of writing frameworks. The benefit of this approach is that is reduces their fears around writing, allowing them to attempt writing tasks with ease and to eventually experiment with different vocabulary with confidence.
Courses:
Writing skills MUST be explicitly taught, so we have created 2 different writing courses to target 2 different areas we know students struggle with. These courses will be offered according to demand at various times throughout the year.
Students per group:
- 4 students to 1 teacher
- 5 x 60 min afternoon sessions – 2:30pm
- The courses only run when we have a minimum of 2 students enrolled, so we encourage you to make up a compatible group and contact us.
- Groups capped at max 4 students to ensure each child receives the attention they deserve and the support they need.
How to enrol:
- To find out more, send an enquiry with your details via our contact page.
