The SMARTER Intervention reading and writing program, is a comprehensive system that allows us to assess, design, and deliver the most effective literacy intervention to your child.
So what does SMARTER actually stand for?
Each letter in the acronym stands for a critical part of the Ascend SMARTER Reading & Writing Intervention Program.
S | Structured Literacy Program – Instruction happens in an organised way following a Scope & Sequence. Students learn best when we start at the most foundational skills, fill them in, and then work their way up. |
M | Multi-sensory – Students learn best when more than one sense is engaged – instead of just hearing and seeing the information. |
A | Applied – Students immediately apply the skills they are learning. This way, they are less likely to forget and lose the information. |
R | Research Based – The program is supported by research. |
T | Targeted – Intervention must be targeted to meet the needs of the student. This is done through consistently tracking data and monitoring progress. |
E | Explicit – Students don’t just ” pick up on things”. Research tells us that we must explain rules in detail and support students in putting all of the “pieces” together. We can’t assume that they will learn a skill if we don’t clearly state it (i.e. when we teach students vowels, we can’t just assume they will understand that every other letter is a consonant). |
R | Realistic – We want to make sure that we are realistic in our expectations for individual students workload and growth |
