Dyslexia Tutor Specialist Teacher

My Background …..

Hi, Iā€™m Marisa Schreier, a dyslexia specialist tutor / teacher. I am also the founder of Sensory Learning Services in Perth, Western Australia. For the past 15 years, I have specialised in providing one-on-one reading and spelling intervention to primary school students, in particular those with Specific Learning Disorders (SLD’s) such as dyslexia and dysgraphia, plus attention disorders such as ADHD, Developmental Language Disorder and students with poor working memory. In addition to working with my private clients, I have worked as a language support teacher at the Telethon Speech and Hearing Centre.

During my career, I was a registered specialist tutor / teacher with The Dyslexia – SPELD Foundation of WA, where I received training in several intervention programs such as Hickey, Alpha to Omega, Sounds Write and Talk 4 Writing. As a result of using evidence based programs, I have gained an extensive wealth of knowledge in the teaching essentials for reading and spelling and best practice for at risk students.

Whilst at Edith Cowan University, I studied linguistics as part of my degree. This ignited my passion for teaching literacy. Throughout my career, I have kept up to date with the science behind reading and the best teaching practices for students with Specific Learning Disorders, in particular those with dyslexia and dysgraphia. In a constant search to better serve my students, I am also trained in delivering the evidence based ASCEND Smarter Reading & Writing Intervention program.

Consequently, my knowledge around the research based principles that are at the core of the different programs I am trained in, allows me to select the perfect program to support my students. As a result, I am able to regularly monitor their progress in order to plan and differentiate for their individual needs.

My Intention …..

” If a child can’t learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn”.

Ignacio Estrada

The very first time I read this quote, it resonated with me and it has been the basis of my approach ever since.

I also believe that teaching is a vocation and you must love what you are doing. Below sums up how I feel about teaching and why I chose to become a specialist tutor:

I LOVE teaching literacy to young children who struggle in this area.

I LOVE to adjust my teaching to support the individual needs of my students who need extra time to focus their attention and extra time to process, consolidate and retrieve information.

I LOVE the organic nature of each session, as I have the freedom to focus on individual learning opportunities as they arise.

I LOVE getting to know each student and deliver multi sensory activities that promote active engagement.

I LOVE encouraging students to become active learners and take ownership of their learning as I provide positive and immediate error feedback.

I LOVE having fun and building relationships to ensure my students feel relaxed and safe to take risks in a non threatening environment.
